At Blossom South Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 92-year-old Ruby Myers, who had been a resident since 2005, had her leg amputated in December due to neglect by the caretakers. When Ruby had fallen out of her bed in September, she fractured her right leg above and below her knee cap. Because the staff didn’t treat her fracture properly or bathe Myers, she developed pressure sores and serious infections that resulted in the amputation. She is now recovering, but as her grandchildren say, she isn’t the “same woman who entered the nursing home almost two years ago.”
Blossom South is already facing an approximate $150,000 fine due to violations found by a Medicare inspection in 2005. From 2006 to 2007, inspectors found almost twenty-four health and safety deficiencies in the facilities. The home also failed to thoroughly investigate two reports of injuries to rule out abuse.
This facility failed to recognize continued abuse within the home. Not only did Blossom South violate health and safety codes multiple times, the owner and staff did not attempt to promptly diminish the deficiencies. Owner Jerry Wood says that they have made “drastic improvements”, However, if that were the case, why did Ruby Myers get to the point of having her right leg amputated? If the staff had been taking care of her, they would have clearly noticed her painful pressure sores and been able to stave off infection.Â
