Chateau Sabelle, a San Mateo County Nursing Home in California, is under investigation after prosecutors claimed that the home failed to prevent a fist-sized ulcer in an 86-year-old resident. Maria Paredes, the 26-year-old primary care giver at the home, was found not guilty of causing the man’s death, but should have prevented the extreme pain and physical condition he was left in during the last weeks of his life.
The victim, whose name is not being released, was brought to the hospital in September of 2006 with advanced bed sores and a large ulcer several inches wide on his lower back. He died a week later from cardiac arrest.
After a year of investigation, Paredes was served with an arrest warrant Dec. 13, 2007. Since Paredes worked as the home’s primary caregiver, she is specifically responsible for the victim’s condition.
