A radio campaign begins today in Alberta, Canada educating listeners on the horrors of elder abuse. The 30-second spots will appear among other radio commercials and are funded by the Elder Advocates of Alberta. Ruth Adria, president of the group, says that because elders are vulnerable, they are often easy targets. She says many people forget that nursing homes are traded on the stock market: many care facilities no longer focus on social service, but instead are about big business. Adria, a registered nurse, began working in a nursing home two decades ago and was shocked by the level of abuse she saw, but even more shocked that nothing seemed to be done about it. Gradually, she became an advocate for the elderly, and is ecstatic to be breaking into the airwaves for her cause.
