WebMD had an interesting article today regarding vision care services for elderly nursing home residents. Many seniors currently residing in long-term care facilities are not receiving routine vision care services, even though they are eligible to receive such services.
The National Nursing Home Survey found that only half of U.S. nursing homes have contracts for vision and hearing services. Studies have estimated that more than half of nursing homes residents have no evidence of having received eye care, even when an eye care provider is available.
The lack of vision care services being given to the elderly should not be taken lightly. Vision problems can lead to sensory deprivation, social withdrawal, depression and a decreased quality of life. If you have a loved one currently in a nursing home, it may be beneficial to inquire on what types of vision care services the facility is currently providing.
