A brother and sister are suing a Chicago-area nursing home for negligence related to a fire that caused their father’s death.
Igor Shetyn and another man were killed last week when a fire broke out in a third floor closet around 11 p.m. Two other residents were injured. It is unclear how the fire was started, but the claim alleges that the staff was not trained to deal with emergencies, and their lack of preparation resulted in two wrongful deaths.
The suit also asks the judge to allow an expert to determine whether or not fire alarms and smoke detectors were working properly. Igor’s daughter said that many residents were shaken awake by aides and caretakers, rather than being awoken by alarms. She also suspects that no one tried to save her father and his roommate when they noticed smoke billowing nearby. “They should be more concerned that there are two gentlemen sleeping in that room,” said the attorney of Igor’s estate.
