Bob Wiggins, of Hampton Roads, Virginia is accusing Ruxton Health of Williamsburg nursing home of being responsible for the death of his mother. He believes his mother, Lorina Wiggins, 83, was poorly taken care of and died prematurely. After seeing his mother’s conditions Wiggins demanded the nursing home send her to a hospital, but his demands were not granted. “I went over to her, uncovered her leg and saw a bandage that was about two inches down from her knee all the way down to her ankle. I’m looking down; I’m seeing bone coming through my mother’s ankle bone and her tendon and her leg.”
The Office of Licensure and Certification for the Department of Health also believes things went wrong. “There were deficiencies involving quality of care, and issues like that, affecting the residents within that facility,” Director Chris Durrer said. In a summary published by investigators, it was found that the nursing staff had recorded that there were “new areas” on several parts of the resident’s body and where a “new wound” was located. However, Ruxton reported that the skin was intact and had no problems. This directly contradicts what Bob Wiggins saw, just days before the death of his mother.

In April, investigators gave Ruxton Health time to make appropriate changes. Durrer said that in June, a second visit found “quality of care” problems had been corrected. The Regional Director of Ruxton Health said, “We’re satisfied with the results of the revisit. We do believe we are in compliance. We are, and the state agreed with us. We’re excited about that and we’re excited to move forward in Williamsburg.” Also according to the Commonwealth Attorney’s office, criminal charges against Ruxton and its staff members are not warranted in the death of Lorina Wiggins.

Bob Wiggins however is not satisfied. He has vowed to work with Virginia lawmakers to create tougher penalties for facilities found to have serious deficiencies. It is our hope that Bob Wiggins earns the justice he deserves from the death of his mother. If you have noticed or been victimized by elder abuse we urge you to contact someone right away.
